Gouramis of the Genus Trichopsis Review
These gouramis look more like a laterally compressed Betta than the oval shaped fish that we normally refer to as gouramis. They are generally smaller than the common gouramis but belong to the same family, the Osphronemidae and subfamily Macropodinae, and have the auxiliary breathing apparatus or labyrinth organ that is common to most of the anabantids.
Whereas most aquarium gouramis have ventral fins modified to form long "feelers" Trichopsis have normal shaped ventrals with just the first few rays extended. The head is pointed with a small upwardly inclined mouth. Couple this with their quiet non-boisterous movements and it is easy to see how one over worked aquarium shop manager labeled up their tank as containing a "Betta species".
